The autumn has truly arrived and unfortunately brought a lot of unsettled weather with it, I’ve had barely any opportunities to capture more images, I’m hoping as we get closer to winter the weather in the UK will improve.

This does however give me ample time to review my data captured in the summer and experiment with different processing techniques, one thing I have been trying out is the new JPEG XL image format which gives a substantial file size reduction compared to the original JPEG and even the fairly modern alternative AVIF that I have been using for a while now.

It recently received full web browser support however some software like WordPress is going to take a while longer, the results are impressive though, a 426KB JPEG is reduced to just 25KB, with AVIF coming in close behind it at around 56KB with a similar quality level, if you need to send images often or store them these are worth trying out, they also offer a lossless mode as well so they are a valid alternative to the more common PNG with file size reduction there as well.

Fingers crossed for a good winter!
